The 67 Mustang Project

This is the car as pulled from a barn July 2003

The project as of May 26, 2004

As a young teenager some of my dream cars where the, 57 Chevy Convertible, 62 Healy 3000 MKII and the late 60s Mustang convertible.

My search for 57 Chevy's proved that I and many others where searching and buying the same vehicle and paying prime dollars well above my budget.  I did find a very nice Healy MKII however I have grown quite a bit since the 60s and needed a shoe horn to get behind the wheel.

A good friend of mine, and fellow ham operator, Paul VE3BBB indicated his son Steven specializes in total restorations of early series Mustangs.  A few visits later I agreed to have Steven  start work on a basket case 67 Convertible.

To make sure the efforts of Steve did not go unnoticed I have started to document the rebirth of this car from when it was pulled from a barn - where it had been stored for 15 years - up until we take possession in the spring of 2004.  The car had been driven in our winters and had not been looked after which took its toll as you can see below.

I updated the site every few weeks as the work progressed.

Please enjoy this project scrap book and remember......

don't scrap them - rebuild them.

July to August 2003 Progress

Here's the car as it was pulled from a barn where it had been stored for the last 15 years.  The previous owner had already started to source some California fenders and doors so we have a good solid base of steel where it counts.  The front right fender in this photo was a NOS fender and the doors are in great shape for their age.

The lower rear quarter panels are in rough shape and will be replaced with new after market parts and welded into the good steel.

The roof and interior will all be replaced with new after market replacements

The dash looks very sad however the actual gauges are in good shape and will look like new behind a new bezel and repainted dash.

The winter salt certainly took its toll on the floor and torque boxes.  All will be replaced with new replacement parts.

Another image (right) showing the poor shape of the floor and reinforcing frame rail present in the rag tops. Below is an image taken a few weeks later after much of this steel had been replaced.   A total new floor will be added in weeks to come.

After the doors and fenders have been removed the project looks like a real basket case.  However in just a few short weeks it starts to take shape as a solid machine.

Here's Steve in the process of stripping the chassis of every nut and bolt to be prepared for a thorough cleaning and sand blasting prior to the etching primer coats.

The next few weeks will be spent replacing all of the rotten steel with new after market parts.  prior to painting the body will be totally rust free and will have a like new base to start rebuilding the car from.

Here Steve is welding in a replacement torque box.

The engine rails and inner panels all have been replaced

A close-up of some replacement work.  All metal that is not solid will be replaced with new after market body components.  It is amazing that any component from the early Mustang's is still being produced today to address the restoration community.

On top is a stock photo of a fully restored 67 that I found on the net.  My plan was to use the same Candy Apple Red colour GT dress scheme with the white parchment interior and the dress wheels.  As you can see from the photo below the project was successful.... I do prefer the red-line tires and styled steel wheel over the above car.
