February 2007
Front End Sheet Metal Rust Repairs

February will most likely not be all that visible as far as progress goes.  There is a lot of underlying rust that needs to be cut away and either patched or replaced with new after market panels.  In the fender aprons we are lucky that the sections of the aprons the have the ford stamping number as well as the vehicle VIN are in good shape.  In this case Steve cuts away the rusted sections and but welds in after market panels.  Once welded and the seam ground down flush, it will be impossible to see the seams and look like factory panels.

With the top of the drivers cowl area cut away, Steve has cut out the rusted areas and then fabricates matching patches

Once welded in place and sealed with seam putty the cowl top will be welded back in place to cover the repairs

Here's a close-up of one patch welded in place and another area cut clean of rust and ready for patching.  The air horns on both sides were badly rusted but the donor car pieces were repairable

February 11, 2007

The Passenger side cowl area has been repaired and parts from the donor car as well as a new rear fender apron are in place.  As is visible here, there is still a lot of repair to the area below the cowl                                                                         February 11, 2007

Here's the repaired drivers cowl area welded back together

Next area of work was to repair the rust holes at base of shock towers.  Note the temporary front suspension   February 25, 2007

The Shock towers were both solid with the exception of rusted through holes at the base caused by poor drainage design.

 February 11, 2007

The cancer is quite visible here.  The rotten steel is being cut out and then Steve will fabricate and weld in place a matching patch.

February 11, 2007

The inside of the repaired shock tower showing the two patched

areas.  Both towers suffered badly from corrosion and with no after market parts, repair was the only option.

February 25, 2007

And the outside showing the two portions of the repaired tower.  The drain holes at the base of both shock towers were blocked with body seam putty.  Typical early Ford QC I guess :(

February 25, 2007

The shock towers are finished. Now for the front fender aprons, some weld cleanup and  she'll be ready for primer

February 25, 2007

Fender aprons are installed and everything ready for primer. The old suspension back in temporarily to move the car
